A staple for more than half of the world's population, rice is a versatile and essential cereal grain cultivated for thousands of years.This dietary cornerstone, particularly in Asia and Africa, is the seed of the grass species Oryza sativa (Asian rice) or the less common Oryza glaberrima (African rice). In 2023, global rice production reached 800 million tons, making it the third most-produced crop after sugarcane and maize.
